The Brand Story

Idioma are run by mother and son Halle and Seth Banks based in Ipswich and London.

They started in 2011 with the aim of enhancing foreign language learning and cultural awareness through visually appealing design. Their first product was a colourful multi-lingual table mat designed for children, and all those young at heart, to learn world languages.

Now their clothing line looks at unique and interesting words, phrases and symbols from world languages and reworks these concepts with innovative designs and illustrations. The ultimate aim of Idioma is to create an international brand with a cultural and social purpose.

The factory is located outside Tirupur, India and is certified by Fairtrade and Global Organic Textile Standard. The factory is powered using wind and solar power.

In addition to GOTS and Fairtrade certifications, the factory has been independently assessed by The FairWear Foundation - an organisation who seek to improve working conditions and pay in factories. They have been categorised as a Leader by FairWear, a position allocated "for member companies who are doing exceptionally well … Leaders show best practices in complex areas such as living wages and freedom of association.”

We particularly liked that FairWear’s Report states that Idioma's supplier visit their factories frequently and that management have been active at training women workers to become supervisors. You can read FairWear’s report here. (Idioma's supplier also source from other factories so the report includes those factories as well).

Organic cotton is better for the soil, the farmers and their families due to the damage that can be caused by chemicals used in conventional cotton production. The organic cotton used for this garment is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard.

42% of the organic cotton that KnowledgeCotton used in 2018 came from Chetna Organic a Fair Trade project in India.

Idioma's supplier have a living wage project in one of their factories, they are wanting to expand this project to other factories and increase the living wage premium.

Water based inks are a more environmentally friendly alternative to commonly used plastisol inks. Idioma use water based inks to screen print part of their collection, however we'd like to see these inks used across their full collection.
