THE ETHICS

The Brand Story

Idioma are run by mother and son Halle and Seth Banks based in Ipswich and London.

They started in 2011 with the aim of enhancing foreign language learning and cultural awareness through visually appealing design. Their first product was a colourful multi-lingual table mat designed for children, and all those young at heart, to learn world languages.

Now their clothing line looks at unique and interesting words, phrases and symbols from world languages and reworks these concepts with innovative designs and illustrations. The ultimate aim of Idioma is to create an international brand with a cultural and social purpose.

Fairtrade Organic Cotton

Organic cotton is better for the soil, the farmers and their families due to the damage that can be caused by chemicals used in conventional cotton production.

Fairtrade cotton seeks to improve the lives of cotton farmers, through tools such as paying a Fairtrade Minimum Price and an additional Fairtrade Premium to invest in business or community projects.

The Factory

This garment is cut & sewn in India. The factory is certified by GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) a high level certification which independently certifies working conditions and environmental management.

Screen Printed in London

This garment was screen printed in London.

Where can Idioma improve?

The GOTS wage policy currently only requires that factories pay the legal minimum wage. We would like to see Idioma make steps towards implementing a living wage throughout their supply chain.

Water based inks are a more environmentally friendly alternative to commonly used plastisol inks. Idioma use water based inks to screen print part of their collection, however we'd like to see these inks used across their full collection.
