THE ETHICS

The Brand Story

Flamingos Life are Spanish trainer makers. With a sunset logo inspired by their home in Gran Alacant, these sneakers give off the sort of nonchalant vibe you get from a place that’s always sunny.

In August 2018, Flamingos Life made a bold decision. Being aware of the lack of transparency in the fashion industry they decided to move production from Asia, to their home of Spain. They now manufacture their products exclusively in family-owned factories with over 40 years of experience in the footwear sector.

Each shoe collection is associated with a specific environmental project. They have paired up with Eden Reforestation Projects and Waste Free Oceans so that your purchase will contribute to reforesting areas of Nepal, Madagascar, Haiti, Ethiopia and Indonesia, or collecting debris from our plastic-laden oceans.

This is a brand who go the extra mile. Ambitious and hopeful – not just looking to make an environmentally-friendly sneaker – they want their business to become a solution to some of the environmental crises we’re facing.

Sustainable Materials

Flamingos' Life use a range of sustainable materials to make their sneakers. They developed a new premium material which is more durable than leather, made from 47% corn waste for the upper. The inner lining is made from bamboo, the insole made from cork and sole made with a mixture of natural and recycled rubber. The sneakers come packaged in a recycled cardboard box.

The Factory

In August 2018 Flamingos' Life switched from making their shoes in Asia to Spain. Being aware of the environmental crisis and the lack of transparency in the fashion industry they decided to start the journey of becoming a sustainable and transparent brand. They returned to Spain, reducing their carbon footprint and gaining more control over the manufacturing process.

They visit their family owned factories - which are located 15km from their office in Spain - once a week to manage orders and monitor the conditions of the workers. The factories have more than 40 years experience in the footwear industry.Workers get paid around 1200 euros per month, which is above the Spanish minimum wage.

This is Antonio. With more than 40 years of experience working in one of Flamingos' Life factories, Fedala Export, based in Elche. In this photo, Antonio is cutting the textile pieces to make their shoes.

Where Flamingos' Life can improve?

Flamingos’ Life are working on buying their cotton from Spain, this will help to reduce their carbon footprint.
