THE ETHICS

The Brand Story

The Level Collective was founded in 2014 by British designer Mark Musgrave.Mark was struck after watching a number of exposé documentaries including The True Cost - which shows the mistreatment of garment workers and abuse of the environment in the fashion industry. (It’s worth a watch, available on Netflix!) This triggered Mark asking questions about where his clothes were made.

Meanwhile he travelled to Romania to volunteer at a charity training people to hand make knitted products, which were then sold to provide living wages. He saw the tangible difference this was making to the everyday lives of these families and knew he had to start something.

As a brand The Level Collective aim to *Live Level -* to pursue a balanced life. They love to explore nature and to travel. They believe in a purposeful vocation - investing their time and energy into meaningful toil. It’s these ideas we see infusing their designs and brand.

Organic Cotton

Organic cotton is better for the soil, the farmers and their families due to the damage that can be caused by chemicals used in conventional cotton production. The organic cotton used for this garment is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard.

The Factory

This garment is cut & sewn in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The factories Level Collective's supplier work with are certified by GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) a high level certification which independently certifies working conditions and environmental management.

Their factories are also assessed by the Fair Wear Foundation who produce a report on the supplier each year. They have been awarded 'Leader' status by Fair Wear for continuous improvements year on year. They have a team in Bangladesh who visit the factories regularly.

Screen Printed in Sheffield, UK

This garment was screen printed in Sheffield using water based inks.

Where The Level Collective can improve?

The Level Collective’s supplier only selects factory with added wage benefits for workers such as child care, medical care, performance bonuses etc. However, we would also like to see an increase from the legal minimum wages in the factories towards a higher “living wage”.

The Level Collective’s labels are sourced from China, however they do not currently have more info on the provenance of their labels. They have informed us though that their next batch of labels will be made using recycled polyester.
